While it may seem like a fairly simple thing to examine the many different why's and how's of the revival effort -- and the fans who have been the holders of the flame of Resurrection for Battlestar Galactica -- it becomes simple and complex at the same time. Since Battlestar Galactica premiered in the late '70's and then found itself unexpectedly thrown into the netherworld known as "cancellation." A lot of myth -- and probably a lot more fallacy -- has been produced about it.
One of the first myths created was "Battlestar Galactica was a clone of Star Wars." Fans of the show know that is not the case. But for people visiting this site for the first time, it might be good to state otherwise. Battlestar Galactica created it's own myths and heroes. As a matter of fact the only real similarity that I can find is that both entities are based in the Sci-Fi genre! Ok, that was simple enough without going into texts and texts of material, so let's tackle another one: "The show was cancelled because it wasn't popular among the television audience." Wrong! As a matter of fact, Battlestar Galactica consistently placed among the high end of the ratings list in it's brief run. The real truth of the situation was that the studio was trying to find ways to save money. Galactica was a bit expensive to produce at that time. You can see where this line of thought is going! The very fact that the fans (whom saw the original run) have remained steadfast all this time. Plus, of course, the ever-growing number of folks that have gotten the opportunity to see it in syndication and on video testifies to its popularity. (Just see what happens when the show re-emerges from the shadows!) I think it's safe to say that a whole new generation of fans, hungry for truly great sci-fi, will have a real treat in store for them! For the last couple of years, series star Richard "Apollo" Hatch has been pursuing the notion of reviving the show. And all those fans have responded. The very simple premise being offered is that the new Galactica will embrace the original cast and themes. (Backed up with the latest state of the art special effects!) I would have to say that's a recipe that will satisfy every fan!
As a matter of fact, Battlestar Galactica consistently placed among the high end of the ratings list in it's brief run.
Another feature (unlike a lot of "remakes" as it were) is that the concept is forward looking: it has a past, but doesn't rely on it for storytelling. Just to make a point: there have always been rumors surrounding the revival over the last couple of years. But this time, things are moving inevitably in that direction. In other words, there has never been a better time to bring it back! It's up to the fanbase to show their support by writing to the studio(s), voicing their commentary on the various Bulletin Boards, letting the "Powers That Be" know that they will be heard! Another truly fantastic thing is the fanbase is considered a PART of the show! Hence this BattlestarGalactica.com web site! Richard Hatch recognizes that for Battlestar Galactica to grow and develop. The fans' input is the biggest determining factor. You, the FANS, are being asked to put YOUR ideas forward! (The great thing is that you WILL be listened to!) I saw a quote the other day that I think will sum it all up. "When a collection of brilliant minds, hearts and talents come together... expect a masterpiece." May the Lords of Kobol bless us all! Help bring back Battlestar Galactica!
