Mattel & Battlestar

Mattel produced a line of toys for Battlestar Galactica, in an effort to cash in on the sci-fi craze at the time. Star Wars toys were raking in the $$ for Kenner, and Battlestar was set to do the same for Mattel. But they didn't limit themselves to making items that actually appeared in the show! Mattel also created some "based on" items from the TV series.

The Mattel 3 1/2 Figure Line

The 3 1/2 inch figures line launched with some of the more popular characters. However some figures you would have expected, like an Apollo figure, were never produced.. The quality of the figures were almost in line with the star wars figures of the day. After looking at an ADAMA figure or Starbuck, one has to ask themselves if this figure couldn't have been better with a little more work on the faces. From what I can recall, I don't remember any details being painted on starbuck's face at all. The original line up of figures : Ovion, Cylon Centurian, Imperious Leader, Daggit, Commander Adama, Lt. Starbuck

A second round of figures gave us :Baltar, Cylon Commander,Boray, Lucifer

The complete release of figures is pictured below. Please note: If you can provide a cleaner scan of any of the figures below please contact us. (However don't send any images unless asked).

Two 12-inch figures were released. Cylon Centurian & Colonial Warrior. Both these figures are rehashed toys converted from another toy line into Battlestar Galactica Toys.

Battlestar Space Toys

This collection includes the VIPER, Cylon Raider, Scarab, & Stellar Probe.

The Viper and Cylon Raider are based on the ships seen on the Television Show. However they both sported some extra features. The Viper split apart from the engine section and you could mix parts with the Scarab and the Steller Probe. Not sure why this was done, but it did give some added merit to owning the Scarab and Steller Probe(Both which never appeared in the actual show.) The Raider featured wings that would pull out and go into "Battle Mode". All the ships came with one figure (even the raider came with only one) that fit nicely into the ships.

It should also be noted that all of these ships originally fired red plastic missiles. Until someone got hurt, then the ships were converted so the missiles would not fire. (Well they would still fire, but they were changed so they couldn't launch away from the ships)

Mattel Issues a Recall For Toy Space Missiles

ATLANTA, Jan. 11, 1979 (UPI) -- A recall order, prompted by the death of one child and injuries to 10 others, was issued today for the tiny toy missiles that go with Battlestar Galactica space toys of the Mattel Corporation. Two million of the toys were sold nationwide. A 4-year old boy from Lilburn, Ga., died Dec. 31 after swallowing one of the projectiles, designed for firing from the space toys. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Mattel Corporation of California issued the "missile mail-in" recall order and said it would run until March 1. Mattel is offering another toy as an inducement to have the missiles returned. The 11/4 inch red plastic missiles were made to fit several of the space toys in the Galactica group, but a mission spokesman said in Washington that the death and injuries appeared associated with only the Colonial Viper toy. The spokesman said the barrel shape of the toy seemed to invite children to put it in their mouths.

The Mattel LANDRAM saw limited release outside of the "US". It was never released in the "US" and many Battlestar fans are unaware it's out there.

The above image is from a Mattel Toy catalog. A "TOY" Battlestar can clearly be seen. So at some time this toy must have been planned for release. As far as we know, this toy was never produced. If anyone has any more information, or a better scan of this wonderful beast - let us know! What kid could have resisted buying his very own Battlestar?
